WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO GO FROM BLOG READER TO BLOG WRITER?
My journey into becoming a blog writer was quite organic, really. For about a year, I found myself constantly emailing my recipes to friends who loved what I was baking and cooking. It became clear that consolidating all these recipes into one accessible place would be incredibly beneficial, not just for them but for me too. The idea of starting a blog initially felt quite daunting and overwhelming, a big leap into the unknown. However, my fiancé, Kevin, was a huge source of encouragement. He saw my passion for both baking and photography and pushed me to take the plunge. His support was pivotal in overcoming that initial hesitation. Given how much I loved capturing the beauty of food through photography, it almost felt inevitable that I would eventually create a visual and textual platform for my creations. It was a natural progression from hobbyist to content creator, driven by a desire to share and a supportive push from loved ones.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BLOGGING?
Without a doubt, my absolute favorite aspect of blogging is the profound connection I forge with my readers. There’s nothing more fulfilling than receiving messages from people all over the world, sharing their experiences with my recipes. Whether it’s a reader telling me how much they loved a particular cookie recipe, or that my instructions gave them newfound confidence and courage in the kitchen, these stories are incredibly powerful. Even more touching are the messages from readers who share how a simple batch of my cookies brought them comfort during challenging times, such as chemotherapy treatments. These heartfelt testimonials truly validate all the hard work and dedication I pour into Sally’s Baking Addiction. Knowing that my recipes can bring joy, comfort, or empowerment makes working seven days a week, often with very little sleep, entirely worth it. It transforms the act of blogging from a mere task into a deeply rewarding experience that fuels my passion for what I do.
WHEN DID IT FEEL LIKE SALLY’S BAKING ADDICTION HAD A SUBSTANTIAL FOLLOWING? DO YOU THINK THERE WAS A POST OR EVENT THAT HELPED YOUR BLOG TURN THAT CORNER?
The moment Sally’s Baking Addiction truly felt like it gained a substantial following was undeniably when my Cake Batter Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe unexpectedly went viral. It was an incredible phenomenon; the recipe spread like wildfire across social media and other platforms, bringing an unprecedented surge of new eyes to my website in a very short period. This massive influx of traffic was a defining moment, a clear indication that the blog was gaining significant traction. While it was exhilarating, it also presented a new challenge: how to retain and continue to engage this burgeoning audience. This experience strongly motivated me to work even harder, not just to create new content but also to enhance the overall quality and user experience of the blog. A key strategic decision around this time was investing in a high-quality, professional camera and diligently learning how to master its functions. Improving my food photography skills became crucial for appealing to and keeping the new traffic, transforming a fleeting viral moment into sustained growth for my baking blog.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR BLOGGERS WHO HAVE FULL TIME JOBS BUT ARE EAGER TO GROW THEIR BLOGS?
For bloggers juggling full-time jobs with the ambition to grow their online platforms, my most straightforward advice is: get used to sleeping less. While that might sound facetious, it’s largely an honest reflection of the reality. If you are truly serious about expanding your blog and elevating it to the next level, you must be prepared to commit to an extraordinary amount of effort. It demands incredibly long hours, unwavering dedication, and relentless persistence. There are no shortcuts to building a successful blog, especially when balancing it with other responsibilities. It often means sacrificing leisure time, waking up earlier, and staying up later to create content, engage with your audience, and manage the technical aspects of your site. Expect to become intimately familiar with large quantities of coffee, as it often becomes a necessity to fuel those extended work sessions. It’s a challenging path, but for those with genuine passion and an iron will, the rewards of seeing your blog flourish can be immensely gratifying, making every late night and early morning worth the investment.
WHAT MAKES OTHER FOOD BLOGS APPEALING TO YOU?
When I visit other food blogs, the first thing that invariably captures my attention and draws me in is excellent photography. As a general rule, we all “eat with our eyes” first, and I am no exception. Beautiful, irresistible-looking food images are incredibly powerful in generating desire and curiosity, compelling me to explore the recipe further. Beyond the visual appeal, I am also strongly drawn to other blogs – and this applies not just to food blogs but to all types of online content – where the blogger comes across as real, genuine, and honest. There’s an unmistakable authenticity that shines through in their writing style, their voice, and the way they interact with their community. It’s relatively easy to discern blogs that aren’t driven by a true passion, or those whose primary motivation appears to be solely financial gain. To truly connect with readers and build a lasting audience, you have to genuinely love what you do. This passion is incredibly obvious in a blogger’s commitment to quality content, their unique writing style, and the conscious effort they make to connect with and truly engage their readers. Authenticity creates trust, and trust builds a loyal following.
HOW DO YOU CONNECT WITH OTHER BLOGGERS?
Connecting with other bloggers is an essential part of being in the blogging community, and it’s something I actively try to prioritize. When I have a spare minute, I make an effort to comment thoughtfully on other blogs, offering genuine feedback and engaging in discussions. I also love to share their incredible recipes and content on my social media channels, giving them a shout-out and helping to amplify their work. There are so many incredibly talented bloggers out there, and fostering these connections enriches the entire community. What’s truly amazing is remembering reading these exact blogs before I even started my own, and now, through the growth of my blog, they know who I am. It’s a pretty surreal and cool feeling to see how hard work can lead to such meaningful connections and recognition within your field. The food blog community, in particular, is an incredibly supportive and vibrant space. Through consistent engagement and mutual support, I’ve been fortunate enough to meet and build friendships with a lot of wonderful people who share similar passions and understand the unique journey of a blogger.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR NEWER BLOGGERS?
My most crucial piece of advice for newer bloggers is to wholeheartedly pursue blogging because you genuinely love it. If your heart isn’t truly invested in the process, you might find yourself growing to resent it over time. Let’s be clear: blogging isn’t always rainbows and sunshine. It demands an immense amount of sweat and, at times, even tears. Seriously, it does! Running around with a 10-pound camera for six hours to capture the perfect shot is definitely a good workout, and the challenges of content creation, technical issues, and audience growth can be taxing. However, if you possess a true passion for your niche and for sharing your voice, you’ll develop the resilience to navigate through the inevitable bumps, plateaus, and challenges at marathon speed. It’s that inherent love that will keep you motivated when things get tough. Along the way, remember to have fun and enjoy the creative journey. Don’t be afraid to constantly learn something new, whether it’s about SEO, photography, coding, or recipe development. Embrace continuous improvement, stay authentic, and let your passion guide your blogging adventure.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your incredible insights and wisdom with us, Sally! Your advice is truly invaluable for anyone looking to grow their food blog and build a thriving online community. Your dedication, passion, and strategic approach are an inspiration to us all.
