Sunday Sips and Bites: Cape Town Edition

An Epicurean Adventure at Taste of Cape Town: A Culinary Journey Despite the Hurdles

The anticipation for this year’s Taste of Cape Town, an unparalleled celebration of gastronomy and fine dining, had been building for weeks. My fiancé and I were finally set to immerse ourselves in the vibrant world of South African cuisine, renowned chefs, and exquisite produce. When I say “finally,” it’s a sentiment laden with a tale of frustrating delays and comedic mishaps that nearly derailed our entire culinary adventure. This wasn’t just a simple trip; it was a journey we were determined to make, no matter what mechanical obstacles stood in our way.

Our initial plan was to attend on Thursday night. I had meticulously secured tickets via Groupon, picturing a sophisticated evening of sampling gourmet delights. We spent a good hour getting ready, donning our best attire, eager to soak in the festival’s atmosphere. Descending to our rented car, which had performed flawlessly just the day before, we were met with a disheartening silence. The engine simply wouldn’t turn over. This particular vehicle, an older model, had a history of being “sticky” to start, but always, eventually, it would comply. Not this night. We tried everything, including the classic ‘push-start’ technique, but the car remained stubbornly unresponsive. Living in the Southern Suburbs meant a cab ride to the city center, where the festival was held, would take too long, eating up precious festival time and likely arriving halfway through the event. Our first attempt at a gourmet evening was a washout, replaced by a wave of profound disappointment.

The following day brought a glimmer of hope. We contacted the rental company, who promptly dispatched a team of mechanics. After what felt like an eternity of tinkering and diagnostics, they performed their magic. The car roared to life, albeit with its usual begrudging rumble. To ensure confidence, they had me start it myself, confirming it was indeed operational. We rescheduled our visit for Saturday night, optimistic that our culinary quest was back on track, completely unaware of the further trials awaiting us.

Just a few hours later, Saturday evening arrived, and with it, renewed excitement. We got into the car, my fiancé turned the key, and once again, nothing. The silence that followed was deafening, amplified by the crushing weight of déjà vu. Having looked forward to this festival for so long, and enduring the previous night’s disappointment, this second breakdown felt like a truly cruel joke, a cosmic prank designed specifically to test our patience. After a few minutes of silent disbelief and denial, the only logical course of action seemed to be seeking solace. I insisted my fiancé take me out to Lyra’s, a local favorite, where I could effectively “drown my sorrows” in the comforting embrace of expertly crafted mojitos. The vibrant atmosphere and refreshing drinks provided a much-needed distraction from our festival woes, offering a temporary reprieve from our transportation predicament.

On Saturday morning, we relayed the unfortunate news to the rental company. Regrettably, their mechanics were unavailable over the weekend, pushing any repair efforts to Monday morning. This time, however, the extended notice allowed us to plan ahead. We arranged for a cab, which, in hindsight, turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The festival, as we soon discovered, boasted an abundance of exquisite wines and craft beverages. Not having to worry about a designated driver meant we could both fully indulge in the tastings without the usual debate over who would sacrifice their evening for the journey home. The cab solution, though a workaround, truly enhanced our overall festival experience, proving that sometimes, detours lead to unexpected pleasures.

Despite all the preamble and the frustrating delays, Taste of Cape Town was unequivocally worth every ounce of trouble. The moment we stepped into the festival grounds, the vibrant energy, enticing aromas, and convivial atmosphere enveloped us, instantly dissolving any lingering frustration. It was a sensory feast, a bustling hub where the best of Cape Town’s culinary scene converged. The sheer variety of stalls, each offering unique gourmet experiences, was overwhelming in the best possible way. We embarked on our tasting journey, my fiancé, a self-proclaimed connoisseur of cured meats, immediately gravitating towards a stall offering a tantalizing chorizo roll. The rich, smoky aroma of the Spanish sausage, nestled in a soft, fresh bun, was an irresistible start to our evening. For my part, I found myself drawn to a stall serving paella, a dish I adore. What arrived was truly incredible – a masterfully prepared rendition, bursting with spicy and savory notes, each grain of rice perfectly infused with flavor. The mussels and fish, cooked to absolute perfection, melted in the mouth, showcasing the incredible freshness of the local seafood. It was a symphony of tastes and textures, setting a high bar for the rest of our culinary exploration.

Insights from the Butcher’s Block: A Culinary Masterclass

One of the highlights of our visit was attending a captivating chef’s demonstration titled “Robertson’s Butcher’s Block.” Robertson’s, for those unfamiliar, is a cornerstone in South African kitchens, a widely recognized and trusted local spice company, known for its extensive range of high-quality seasonings. They partnered with The Big Green Egg for this particular demonstration, and I must confess, I spent a significant portion of the session gazing enviously at the iconic ceramic cookers. I’ve harbored a deep desire for a Big Green Egg for years; they are, in my opinion, one of the most incredibly versatile and efficient pieces of cooking equipment ever invented. These culinary marvels function as a barbecue, a smoker, an oven, and practically anything else you could possibly imagine, offering unparalleled control over temperature and moisture for truly exceptional results. Witnessing them in action only intensified my longing.

The demonstration itself was led by Caroline McCann, the esteemed owner of Braeside Meat Market in Johannesburg. Caroline, with her expert hands and clear instructions, guided us through the precise art of butchery.

She meticulously demonstrated how to remove the center carcass of a chicken, a technique that allows the bird to be laid perfectly flat. This method, often referred to as spatchcocking, is incredibly useful for ensuring even cooking, whether you’re preparing it for a traditional South African “braai” (barbecue) or roasting it in an oven. As someone who readily admits to having “no idea what I’m doing” when it comes to butchering anything beyond basic cuts, this demonstration was immensely informative and empowering. It demystified a process that often seems daunting, making it accessible to home cooks.

Following Caroline’s practical insights, a local farmer took the stage, offering a deeper dive into the world of ethically sourced meat. He spoke passionately about their farm, which specializes exclusively in Afrikaner cattle—a hardy, indigenous South African breed I had, surprisingly, never encountered before. This breed is known for its robust nature and the exceptional quality of its meat, often praised for its flavor and texture. The farmer emphasized the paramount importance of “knowing your farmer” and understanding the provenance of your meat. This concept resonated deeply, highlighting the growing movement towards transparency in the food industry, advocating for consumer awareness about animal welfare, sustainable farming practices, and the direct impact these choices have on both flavor and environmental responsibility. Caroline then added another layer of practical wisdom, teaching us a simple trick: you can often tell if a chicken is genuinely free-range by inspecting its breasts. If you observe subtle indents where feathers once were, it’s a strong indicator of a bird that has lived a more natural, active life. The farmer further elaborated that for beef, a good indication of free-range practices is if the fat has a distinct yellow hue, a direct result of the cattle’s diet of nutrient-rich grasses and natural foraging. These simple yet profound insights underscored the value of informed choices and the connection between how animals are raised and the quality of the food on our plates.

The entire presentation was incredibly informative and utterly fascinating, offering a rare glimpse into the dedication and expertise behind quality meat production. Inspired and thoroughly enlightened, we promptly made our way to their stand. Our reward? Some authentic “biltong,” a beloved South African cured meat. Far more than just “jerky,” biltong is a unique delicacy, often made from beef, game, or even ostrich, seasoned with a blend of vinegar, salt, and spices like coriander, then air-dried. It boasts a distinct texture and flavor profile, ranging from tender to firm, and from savory to subtly sweet. Oh, how my fondness for cured meats was satisfied that evening!

Gourmet Delights and Sweet Endings

Our culinary journey continued with another show-stopping dish: pork belly from the renowned restaurant Azure. This wasn’t just any pork belly; it was a masterpiece. The dish was presented with a vibrant array of accompaniments: a sweet and tangy chutney, a rich, smoky barbecue sauce, a delicate pea puree that added a touch of freshness, a crispy “pork puff” (similar to a sophisticated pork rind, offering an addictive crunch), and a perfectly formed potato ball. The pork belly itself was a revelation – the skin rendered incredibly crispy and golden, crackling with every bite, while the meat beneath was unbelievably tender, juicy, and rich, melting in the mouth with an explosion of flavor. Each component played a vital role, complementing the pork belly beautifully, creating a harmonious and unforgettable plate. I honestly don’t know if there’s any food better in the world than perfectly executed pork belly; this dish certainly reinforced that sentiment. Azure’s reputation for culinary excellence was certainly on full display.

No major festival is complete without a visit to the beverage tents, and a special trip to the Jack Daniel’s tent was a must for my fiancé. He opted for the distinguished single barrel whiskey, appreciating its complex notes and smooth finish. Meanwhile, I found myself indulging in their honey whiskey, a decision that further cemented my burgeoning appreciation for the spirit. I’m slowly but surely coming around to whiskey, and this particular honey-infused iteration was impossible not to like; it was incredibly smooth, sweet, and approachable, almost like a grown-up candy in a glass. The atmosphere in the tent was buzzing, offering a chance to relax and savor a different kind of craftsmanship.

As the evening drew to a close, we realized we needed to bring a piece of this culinary magic home with us. Our shared love for cured meats led us to make one final, strategic stop at Cape Mountain Charcuterie’s stand. There, we procured a generous portion of their exquisite Spanish chorizo. This artisanal chorizo, with its vibrant paprika hue and robust flavor, promised to extend our festival experience well beyond the grounds. Indeed, it did, as I later transformed it into an incredible breakfast hash that I’m eager to share with you all later this week! The thought of recreating a piece of that gourmet experience in our own kitchen was the perfect way to cap off our savory explorations.

Last but certainly not least, no truly satisfying culinary journey is complete without dessert. Despite the fading light and the not-so-great picture quality, the memory of our sweet conclusions remains vivid. I treated myself to a delightful lemon meringue cupcake, its tangy lemon curd perfectly balanced by the sweet, airy meringue and soft cake. My fiancé opted for a rich Rollo tart, a decadent creation featuring the classic caramel-filled chocolate candy. Both choices were excellent, providing the perfect sweet ending to an evening filled with extraordinary flavors and experiences. We left the festival incredibly happy, our bellies full and our spirits soaring, thoroughly satisfied with every bite and sip.

For anyone fortunate enough to be in South Africa, I wholeheartedly recommend catching the Taste festival. It travels to various cities, with upcoming events in Durban and Johannesburg, offering a similar caliber of culinary excellence and entertainment. It truly is a premier food festival, showcasing the best of local and international cuisine. Despite the initial frustrations and the unexpected car troubles, overcoming those hurdles only made the eventual experience at Taste of Cape Town even more rewarding and memorable. We were so incredibly glad we persevered and finally found a way to attend this remarkable celebration of food and drink. It was an unforgettable gastronomic adventure that left a lasting impression, a testament to the vibrant and diverse culinary landscape of South Africa.
