My Latest Reads: Unpacking This Month’s Literary Journey, Discovering Hoopla, and Dive into Engaging Stories

This past month has presented quite an interesting and diverse tapestry of reading experiences. My pace has been somewhat slower than usual, primarily because several of the books I delved into felt particularly “heavy” in their themes and emotional weight. For instance, I recently completed “Little Mercies” on audio, a title I started exploring last month. While I certainly appreciated its depth and narrative, pairing it with “Pretty Baby,” which I also read this month, proved to be a somewhat intense combination. Both books are undeniably good, but their poignant subject matter created a rather profound and reflective reading period.
Amidst these thought-provoking reads, I stumbled upon a truly exciting discovery that I absolutely must share with you: Hoopla! Have you heard of it? A wonderful suggestion from my long-time blog friend, Debbi, this platform has genuinely revolutionized my approach to accessing books. I am incredibly grateful she brought it to my attention. Upon downloading the app and simply entering my local library card number, I was granted immediate access to an astonishing collection of digital books and audiobooks – all completely free! This accessibility is nothing short of thrilling for an avid reader like myself.
While I don’t typically gravitate towards e-books for my fiction reads, having them readily available is incredibly convenient, especially for non-fiction genres. I’ve found Hoopla to be an invaluable resource for parenting, self-help, and spiritual books, which I often prefer to consume digitally. Beyond books, Hoopla also offers a vast array of music and movies, making it a comprehensive digital entertainment hub. I’m still exploring its full potential, but already, I’ve checked out an insightful parenting guide, a new cookbook, and am currently immersed in an engaging audiobook. The generous allowance of six titles per month per library card means there’s always something new to discover. My children are also enjoying it on our family iPad; my daughter particularly loved listening to a couple of children’s audiobooks during our Spring Break. Seriously, friends, if you haven’t yet, you absolutely need to get Hoopla! Can you tell just how enthusiastic I am about this amazing resource?
This Month’s Journey Through Pages: My Latest Reads

Pretty Baby by Mary Kubica
As I mentioned, this novel was a compelling read, though its subject matter, especially when coupled with “Little Mercies,” made for a rather intense experience. Mary Kubica has a knack for crafting deeply psychological thrillers that explore the complexities of human nature and difficult moral dilemmas. The narrative draws you in from the very first page, forcing you to question motives, perceptions, and the true meaning of kindness. The story delves into themes of charity, perception, and the unsettling ease with which lives can become intertwined in unforeseen ways. Kubica’s writing style is gripping, building suspense masterfully and keeping you on edge throughout. It’s a truly thought-provoking book that resonates long after the final page.
Heidi Wood has always been a charitable woman. Still, her husband and daughter are horrified when Heidi returns home one day with a young woman named Willow and her four-month-old baby in tow. Disheveled and apparently homeless, this girl could be a criminal—or worse. Nevertheless, Heidi invites Willow and the baby to take refuge in their home, despite her family’s objections. As clues into Willow’s past begin to surface, Heidi is forced to decide how far she’s willing to go to help a stranger. What starts as an act of kindness quickly spirals into an unrelenting web of lies and a story far more twisted than anyone could have anticipated.

A delightful shift in my reading habits this month came from an unexpected source: my son. He’s been persistently urging me to dive into some of his most cherished books, and I happily obliged. Sharing his favorite stories with him has been an incredibly fun and rewarding experience, offering a refreshing departure from my usual literary selections. It’s wonderful to see what captivates his imagination and to discuss these narratives together.

Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson
I can’t quite recall how my son first discovered “Fever 1793,” but I distinctly remember picking it up with him at the bookstore earlier in the school year. This historical fiction novel proved to be an utterly compelling read, and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. Set during the yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia, the story plunges you into a gripping and realistic portrayal of life during a public health crisis. Laurie Halse Anderson masterfully brings the era to life, showcasing the fear, chaos, and resilience of ordinary people. The protagonist, Mattie Cook, is a wonderfully developed character whose journey from a spirited, somewhat naive girl to a courageous survivor is both inspiring and heartbreaking. The book not only educates about a significant historical event but also explores universal themes of family, survival, and community. It was a powerful reminder of human perseverance in the face of adversity, and I highly recommend it for its historical richness and emotional depth.
During the summer of 1793, Mattie Cook lives above the family coffee shop with her widowed mother and grandfather. Mattie spends her days avoiding chores and making plans to turn the family business into the finest Philadelphia has ever seen. But then the fever breaks out.
Disease sweeps the streets, destroying everything in its path and turning Mattie’s world upside down. At her feverish mother’s insistence, Mattie flees the city with her grandfather. But she soon discovers that the sickness is everywhere, and Mattie must learn quickly how to survive in a city turned frantic with disease.

Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry
This book marks my deeper immersion into Lois Lowry’s incredible series, serving as the second installment after “The Giver,” which I read a few months ago. My son absolutely devoured this entire series, and his persistent encouragement finally led me to pick up the subsequent books. I am so genuinely glad I did, because I am officially hooked! The series, comprised of four books in total, transports readers to a thought-provoking, futuristic world. While sharing thematic links with “The Giver,” “Gathering Blue” introduces a new protagonist, Kira, and explores a different facet of a dystopian society where unique talents are both valued and exploited. The characters, primarily young people, navigate complex social structures and uncover profound truths about their communities. Like its predecessor, “Gathering Blue” is a relatively quick read, but it’s incredibly immersive, offering a fantastic escape for the mind into another time and place. Lowry’s ability to create vivid, distinctive worlds and challenge readers to consider fundamental questions about society, memory, and freedom is truly remarkable. I particularly appreciate how the series delves into what truly makes us human and what we hold dear.
As she did in The Giver and later Messenger, in Gathering Blue Lois Lowry challenges readers to imagine what our world could become, how people could evolve, and what could be considered valuable.

Messenger by Lois Lowry
I’m nearing the completion of “Messenger,” the third book in Lois Lowry’s enthralling Giver Quartet. This tiny but mighty volume continues to expand the intricate universe established in “The Giver” and “Gathering Blue,” weaving together characters and themes in fascinating ways. I’m absolutely loving this series for its unique blend of poignant storytelling and profound philosophical questions. With “Son” next on my reading list, I’m eagerly anticipating the culmination of this incredible saga.

Yes Please by Amy Poehler
My other current read is the hilarious and insightful memoir, “Yes Please,” by the incomparable Amy Poehler. I was thrilled to discover this gem available on Hoopla, making it the perfect companion for a road trip over Spring Break. Listening to her narrate her own story in audiobook format is an absolute delight. Her distinctive voice and impeccable comedic timing had me laughing out loud on multiple occasions. Amy Poehler’s candid reflections on her career, motherhood, ambition, and the journey of self-discovery are not only entertaining but also genuinely inspiring. It’s a wonderful blend of humor, wisdom, and raw honesty that only she could deliver. This book is a true testament to her brilliance and a fantastic example of the diverse content available through Hoopla.
