A Savannah Spring Awakening

Discovering Savannah, Georgia: An Unforgettable Spring Family Adventure Guide

Spring In Savannah, Georgia

A few weeks ago, my family and I embarked on a delightful and somewhat spontaneous journey to Savannah, Georgia, just in time for the vibrant Easter weekend. My husband and I had previously experienced the enchanting charm of Savannah a few years prior and had always dreamt of returning, this time with our children in tow. Savannah truly offers something for everyone in our family: my oldest son, a budding history enthusiast, found endless fascination in its past; my daughter, much like myself, was captivated by the city’s picturesque scenery; and our youngest, an energetic 18-month-old, relished the ample space to explore and run freely. It proved to be the quintessential family getaway, and experiencing Savannah during the blossoming beauty of spring was an absolute treat we will cherish forever.

Where We Stayed: Family-Friendly Comfort at Embassy Suites

For our accommodation, we chose the Embassy Suites, acting on a thoughtful recommendation from a friend. As a growing family of five, we’ve come to realize that a standard hotel room simply no longer suffices, especially with an active toddler requiring plenty of space to roam and nap without disturbing everyone else. We craved room to breathe, and Embassy Suites delivered spectacularly.

Our stay included two connecting rooms, providing the perfect solution for our family’s needs. One room functioned as a traditional hotel room, featuring two comfortable queen beds and an attached private bathroom. The adjacent room was a spacious living area, complete with a convenient pullout sofa, its own large television – perfect for the kids to wind down with after a day of adventures – a functional desk area, and a kitchenette setup including a sink, fridge, and microwave. This second room also offered direct access to the bathroom, making evening routines much smoother. This two-room suite configuration was, without a doubt, one of the best decisions we made for our trip; it offered ample space, privacy, and convenience, making our stay incredibly comfortable and stress-free. I wholeheartedly recommend Embassy Suites for any family in need of generous space during their travels to Savannah.

Beyond our fantastic suite, the hotel itself impressed us with its expansive, clean, and welcoming environment. The lobby area was vast and elegantly designed, offering numerous comfortable seating arrangements where guests could relax and socialize. However, the undisputed highlight for both our children and us adults was the magnificent complimentary breakfast spread served every single morning. It was far more than a simple continental breakfast; it was a lavish hot buffet featuring everything imaginable. We indulged in fluffy scrambled eggs, hearty oatmeal, golden pancakes, a variety of savory meats, and classic biscuits with gravy. For those with a lighter appetite, there were fresh yogurts, an assortment of seasonal fruits, and an array of sweet pastries and breads.

The star of the breakfast, however, was the bustling omelet station, where a cheerful chef custom-prepared omelets to order. While I don’t typically opt for omelets when dining out, I found myself thoroughly enjoying a delicious spinach, mushroom, onion, and Swiss cheese omelet for two mornings straight – a testament to its freshness and quality. As an added bonus, Embassy Suites hosts a delightful happy hour reception in the early evening for its guests, offering complimentary snacks – including the most addictive homemade potato chips, a personal weakness of mine – and a selection of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. A refreshing sangria paired with a plate of cheese, fresh veggies, and those irresistible potato chips with dip was precisely what this weary mama needed after a full day of exploring Savannah on foot. The value provided by staying here, with both a substantial breakfast and an evening reception included, was truly exceptional for a family vacation. The breakfast alone saved us the significant hassle and expense of finding a suitable dining spot for five hungry travelers each morning, making our trip both more enjoyable and budget-friendly.

What We Did: Embracing Savannah’s Charm on Foot

Our primary mode of exploration in Savannah was, quite simply, walking. And we walked a lot. The experience was nothing short of wonderful. The weather throughout our trip was absolutely perfect for pedestrian exploration – warm enough to be comfortable, but without the oppressive heat that can sometimes characterize Southern springs. This ideal climate allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the city’s ambiance without feeling rushed or overheated. We had anticipated that Savannah would be an excellent family destination precisely because of its walkable nature, and our expectations were truly exceeded. Those of you who use fitness trackers will appreciate this: we proudly hit an impressive 18,000 steps by 5 PM one day, a testament to how much ground we covered and how easily one can navigate this beautiful city on foot!

Savannah is broadly characterized by two main areas: the lively River Street and the historically rich District. While we did visit River Street, strolling along its iconic cobblestones and admiring the views of the Savannah River, we dedicated the majority of our time to delving into the enchanting Historical District and the expansive Forsyth Park. Our goal was to meander through as many of Savannah’s famous squares as possible, absorbing the unique character of each, and to spend a leisurely afternoon simply playing and relaxing in Forsyth Park. The ability to walk from one beautiful square to another, discovering hidden gems and architectural marvels along the way, is a defining aspect of the Savannah experience.

Forsyth Park: An Urban Oasis for All Ages

Forsyth Park is an absolutely amazing urban oasis and truly the heart of Savannah’s public spaces. You’ll likely recognize its magnificent, iconic fountain, which graces countless photographs and paintings, serving as a symbol of the city itself. However, the park is so much more than just this famous landmark. It boasts not one, but several well-maintained playgrounds, offering endless entertainment for children of all ages. Its sprawling, lush lawns provide vast open spaces perfect for picnicking, tossing a frisbee, or simply letting little ones (like our youngest!) run wild and burn off energy. The park is also a fantastic spot for people-watching, as it attracts a diverse array of locals and tourists alike, creating a vibrant, dynamic atmosphere.

During our visit, we observed a variety of captivating scenes: college students lounging on blankets, diligently sketching in their pads; an incredibly agile group of kids practicing their trapeze skills, with ropes expertly tied between trees, literally walking a tightrope and performing flips; and countless families and friends enjoying spirited games of frisbee, ball, and kite-flying, alongside leisurely picnics. I could honestly spend every single day immersed in the serene beauty and lively atmosphere of Forsyth Park. We had the foresight to bring our own ball, which provided hours of fun, but we regrettably forgot a blanket to sit on. Nevertheless, it didn’t deter me from simply laying down in the soft grass, gazing up through the dappled sunlight filtering through the magnificent oak trees – a simple pleasure that served as a lovely reminder to do that more often in life.

Exploring Savannah’s Historic District: Architecture, Gardens, and Timeless Beauty

I am genuinely captivated by the exquisite homes, lush gardens, and stunning architecture that permeate every corner of Savannah’s Historic District. Every turn presented a new visual delight, from the intricately designed doors to the ornate wrought iron work that adorned balconies and gates, each element telling a story of bygone eras. The city’s commitment to preserving its historical integrity is evident in every well-maintained facade and charming detail, making it a feast for the eyes and a paradise for history buffs and architecture lovers alike.

One of the most profound and memorable experiences of our Easter weekend trip was attending Mass on Easter morning at The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist. This magnificent church is simply stunning, defying words to capture its grandeur and beauty. Honestly, it is the most visually breathtaking church I have ever had the privilege of entering, with its soaring ceilings, intricate stained-glass windows, and ornate altars that inspire awe and reverence. The spiritual significance of being there on Easter Sunday added another layer of depth to our visit, making it an truly unforgettable moment for our family.

Another activity high on our daughter’s wishlist was a classic horse carriage ride through the historic streets. While our hotel concierge recommended the hop-on/hop-off trolley tour for a more comprehensive and informative overview of the city, our children were far more enthusiastic about the charm and novelty of a horse-drawn carriage tour – and I certainly couldn’t blame them! There’s something undeniably magical about clip-clopping along cobblestone streets, taking in the sights from a unique, leisurely perspective. We easily booked our tour through Carriage Tours of Savannah directly in person at City Market, though it’s always a good idea to call ahead and reserve, especially during peak travel seasons, to ensure availability.

Where We Ate: Family-Friendly Dining in Savannah

Savannah boasts an incredible array of restaurants, offering culinary delights to suit every palate. As much as I would have loved to capture and share a multitude of food photos from every place we dined, the reality of navigating meal times with three children – particularly an energetic 18-month-old – often made snapping perfect shots of our plates quite challenging. And honestly, that’s perfectly okay! The focus was on enjoying the moments and the company, and there will always be a next time for more extensive food photography. (From the few food pictures I did manage to capture, it seems plenty of beer and Bloody Mary’s were enjoyed, though! No judgment, please!)

Our first revisited favorite was Six Pence Pub, a charming British-style pub that we had absolutely loved on our previous visit to Savannah. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, making it a comfortable spot for a casual family meal. I savored their delicious Grilled Salmon BLT, a dish that perfectly combines fresh flavors with classic pub comfort. It’s a place that consistently delivers great food and a welcoming vibe, solidifying its spot on our must-visit list.

Spring In Savannah - McDonough's Pub

For a delightful snack and an exceptional drink, we stopped at McDonough’s. This pub is renowned for serving one of the best Bloody Marys I’ve ever tasted, elevated by the unique addition of Guinness – a flavorful twist that makes it truly stand out. We also indulged in their freshly cut and fried tortillas, which were incredibly delicious and satisfying. The service from the bartenders and cook was incredibly friendly and attentive, adding to the relaxed and enjoyable experience. It’s a great spot to unwind and enjoy some quality pub fare.

Spring In Savannah - The Public

Easter lunch was a memorable affair at The Public. This restaurant offers a more contemporary dining experience with a fantastic menu that appealed to everyone in our family. We absolutely loved the ambiance, the quality of the food, and the overall service. It quickly became a new favorite, and we’ve already decided that we will definitely be returning on our next visit to Savannah. It’s an excellent choice for a special meal or simply a superb dining experience.

Spring In Savannah - Moon River Brewery

For a more casual and lively experience, we spent some fun time in the beer garden at Moon River Brewing Company. This was a fantastic spot where both adults and kids could relax and enjoy themselves. The spacious outdoor area allowed the children to move around comfortably while we enjoyed some local brews and the vibrant atmosphere. It’s an ideal choice for families looking for a laid-back dining and social experience that caters to everyone.

Savannah holds a truly special place in my heart, a sentiment that has clearly rubbed off on my children. Just yesterday, as they were happily finishing up some delicious sweets we brought back from our trip, both of them enthusiastically declared that they couldn’t wait to go back. Hearing that brought an immense smile to my face, confirming that our spontaneous getaway had created lasting, joyful memories for everyone. I eagerly anticipate our next return to this enchanting city with them, ready to create even more unforgettable family moments amidst Savannah’s timeless charm.
