February Reading Recap: Our Family’s Favorite Books and Must-Reads for the Month

As I reflect on the past few weeks, I can hardly believe that February is drawing to a close. This month felt like it flew by in a blur, and consequently, my personal reading pace slowed down considerably. Life, as it often does, intervened with its myriad demands, pulling me away from the quiet solace of my books. Our calendar was packed with joyous birthday celebrations, necessary home improvement projects that always take more time than anticipated, focused periods of studying, and a host of other commitments that left little room for leisurely reading.
For me, the sacred ritual of reading typically happens right before I drift off to sleep. That precious window of 15 to 30 minutes, dedicated to diving into a good story, is usually how I unwind and prepare for rest. However, lately, I’ve found myself more exhausted than usual, struggling to get to bed at an earlier, more reasonable hour. This fatigue has unfortunately whittled down my cherished reading time from a peaceful quarter-hour or more to a mere two minutes before my eyelids feel too heavy to keep open. It’s a common struggle for many avid readers trying to balance life’s responsibilities with their passion for books.
Despite these challenges and the slower pace, I did manage to finish one truly captivating book just this morning, and it was an absolute gem that made every precious minute of reading worthwhile!

A Gripping Thriller: Every Fifteen Minutes by Lisa Scottoline
Every Fifteen Minutes by Lisa Scottoline proved to be an incredibly intense and nerve-wracking read. This psychological thriller, a masterclass in suspense, truly had me on edge for its entirety. The story centers around a highly successful psychiatrist, Dr. Eric Parrish, whose seemingly perfect professional life begins to crumble as his personal world simultaneously unravels. Scottoline masterfully crafts a narrative where the protagonist’s home life is in disarray, creating a palpable sense of vulnerability.
Things take a darker turn when Dr. Parrish begins working with a deeply troubled young patient. What starts as a routine professional engagement quickly spirals into a series of interconnected and seemingly unrelated circumstances that threaten to destroy his career and reputation. The plot unfolds like a relentless train wreck – you know things are going terribly wrong, yet you simply cannot look away. The author’s ability to build tension and maintain a high level of suspense is truly remarkable, making it one of those books you feel compelled to keep reading, desperate to uncover how such a catastrophic chain of events could possibly resolve itself. I thoroughly enjoyed this compelling read and am certainly going to explore more titles by Lisa Scottoline, an author who clearly excels at crafting gripping narratives.

My Current Audiobook Journey: Little Mercies by Heather Gudenkauf
Continuing my literary journey, I’ve just embarked on Little Mercies by Heather Gudenkauf on Audible, and I’m already finding myself deeply engrossed. Gudenkauf is known for her emotionally charged and often suspenseful novels that delve into the complexities of human nature and difficult circumstances. The premise, as described on Amazon, immediately piqued my interest:
Veteran social worker Ellen Moore has seen the worst side of humanity—the vilest acts one person can commit against another. She is a fiercely dedicated children’s advocate and a devoted mother and wife. But one blistering summer day, a simple moment of distraction will have repercussions that Ellen could never have imagined, threatening to shatter everything she holds dear, and trapping her between the gears of the system she works for.
This synopsis promises a powerful story exploring themes of guilt, the fallibility of even the most dedicated individuals, and the unforgiving nature of the very systems designed to protect. As an audiobook, it’s perfect for accompanying me during chores or commutes, allowing me to immerse myself in Ellen Moore’s harrowing journey as she navigates an unthinkable crisis. I’m eager to see how Gudenkauf explores the emotional depths and moral dilemmas presented by such a compelling situation, and how Ellen fights to reconcile her professional commitment with her personal devastation.
Anticipated Reads and a Son’s Heartfelt Request
My nightstand currently holds a delightful pile of books eagerly awaiting my attention, a testament to the endless allure of new stories. Among them are Pretty Baby by Mary Kubica and At The Water’s Edge by Sara Gruen, the acclaimed author of the beloved Water For Elephants. I’m always curious to hear what other readers think, so if anyone has delved into either of these titles, please share your thoughts! Mary Kubica is known for her domestic thrillers that often feature unexpected twists, and I anticipate Pretty Baby will deliver another gripping tale of suspense. Sara Gruen’s At The Water’s Edge, set during WWII, transports readers to the Scottish Highlands in a quest for the Loch Ness Monster, while simultaneously exploring themes of marital strain and self-discovery, promising a rich, atmospheric read quite different from her previous work.
Adding another delightful challenge to my reading queue is my son, who is absolutely begging me to read either the fourth Harry Potter book or The Hobbit, which he just finished himself. There’s truly nothing more heartwarming than your child wanting to share their literary adventures with you. His enthusiasm is infectious, and it’s a wonderful reminder of the powerful connection that books can forge within a family. The dilemma of choosing between the magical world of Hogwarts and the classic fantasy journey of Bilbo Baggins is a tough one! Each offers a unique escape and a chance to bond over shared stories. I need to make a decision today on which enchanting world to enter next. Oh, the eternal struggle of a book lover: so many incredible books, and never enough time to read them all! This shared passion for reading is something I cherish and actively try to foster in my children, and seeing it blossom makes my heart full.
What My Kids Are Reading: Inspiring Young Minds Through Literature
Knowing that I’m always on the hunt for engaging book ideas for my own children, I thought it would be wonderful to share what my kids are currently engrossed in. Cultivating a love for reading in children is one of the most rewarding aspects of parenthood, opening up endless worlds of imagination and knowledge. Seeing them eagerly turn pages, lost in a story, is a joy unlike any other. Finding the right books that resonate with their age, interests, and developing reading skills is key. As always, please feel free to leave your own children’s book recommendations in the comments section; a vibrant reading community thrives on shared discoveries!

My 11-Year-Old Son’s Current Reads: Adventure and Quirky Characters
My 11-year-old son recently devoured the Young Reader version of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. This adapted version is a fantastic way to introduce younger readers to the foundational work of modern fantasy without overwhelming them with the original’s dense prose. It tells the classic tale of Bilbo Baggins’ unexpected journey with a company of dwarves and the wizard Gandalf, encountering dragons, elves, and a magical ring along the way. It’s a perfect entry point into a beloved literary universe, teaching valuable lessons about courage, friendship, and self-discovery.
Currently, he’s immersed in Skink by Carl Hiaasen. My son absolutely loves this author, and it’s easy to see why! Hiaasen is known for his unique blend of humorous storytelling, environmental themes, and quirky, memorable characters, often set against the backdrop of Florida’s wild landscapes. Skink is an adventure novel perfect for young readers who enjoy a good mystery, a dash of irreverence, and a protagonist who might be a bit of an eccentric rogue. Hiaasen’s books often tackle serious issues with a lighthearted touch, making them both entertaining and thought-provoking for middle-grade readers.

My 9-Year-Old Daughter’s Enchanting Stories: Classics and Judy Blume
My daughter, who just turned 9, is thoroughly enjoying her reading selections this month. She’s currently delighting in a Junior Classic version of Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. I stumbled upon this and several other Junior Classics at Michaels for just $1 each – a true treasure hunt find! These adapted versions are fantastic for introducing children to timeless literary works that might otherwise be too challenging in their original form. Little Women, with its enduring themes of sisterhood, family, aspirations, and growing up in 19th-century New England, continues to captivate young readers with the lives of the March sisters. It’s a beautiful way for her to connect with classic literature and explore universal coming-of-age experiences.
In addition to this classic, she’s also reading Blubber by Judy Blume. Oh, Judy Blume! Reading this title instantly brings me back to my own childhood. Blume is a groundbreaking author who fearlessly addressed real-life issues that children and adolescents face, often tackling sensitive topics like bullying, body image, and social dynamics with honesty and empathy. Blubber is a powerful story about a girl named Linda and her experience with bullying, offering important lessons about kindness, standing up for oneself, and the complexities of friendships. It’s a testament to Blume’s enduring relevance that her books continue to resonate with and guide young readers through the challenging waters of childhood. Both selections are wonderful examples of how children’s literature can be both entertaining and deeply meaningful.
