Why Homemade Burritos Are a Game-Changer for Busy Families
Witnessing my kids, especially my son, embrace burritos with such enthusiasm has been a joy. After years of them opting for the standard cheese quesadilla when we eat out for Mexican, their newfound love for burritos has opened up a whole new world of dinner possibilities at home. We already enjoy many quesadillas and tostadas, but adding burritos to our repertoire has added exciting variety. It’s fantastic to see them explore new flavors and textures, and it motivates me to create wholesome versions of their restaurant favorites.
Creating burritos at home offers several advantages. Not only can you control the quality and freshness of the ingredients, but you can also tailor the fillings to suit everyone’s preferences, ensuring a meal that’s both nutritious and delicious. My goal isn’t to replicate the massive, sometimes overwhelming, burritos found at fast-casual spots; instead, I focus on crafting a filling that is perfectly portioned, incredibly hearty, and bursting with flavor without being excessively bulky. This recipe strikes that ideal balance, providing a satisfying meal that’s easy to handle and even easier to love.
The Secret to Effortless Flavor: Bush’s Cocina Latina Frijoles Negros Machacados
The heart of these burritos lies in a truly exceptional ingredient that simplifies the cooking process while maximizing flavor: Bush’s Cocina Latina Frijoles Negros Machacados – seasoned black refried beans! Stirring these rich, flavorful beans directly into the lean ground turkey mixture is a game-changer. They provide not just incredible taste but also a wonderful “bulk” that makes the burritos incredibly satisfying, all while keeping the ingredient list short and preparation quick. Typically, I’d reach for a taco seasoning packet to spice up ground meat, but with these perfectly seasoned beans, it’s simply not necessary. This means fewer steps, fewer ingredients to measure, and a consistently delicious result every time. It’s truly easy peasy!
These beans are so versatile and delicious that I often use them in other family-favorite recipes, like my Mini Mexican Stuffed Peppers – they make a fantastic appetizer or light meal!

The Ultimate Make-Ahead Dinner Solution for Busy Weeknights
One of the most valuable discoveries I’ve made since perfecting this recipe is just how perfectly suited these Turkey and Black Bean Burritos are for meal prepping. They are the absolute ideal make-ahead dinner, especially for those chaotic evenings when kids have sports practice, after-school activities, or when you find yourself constantly in and out of the house around dinner time. The ability to prepare a wholesome, satisfying meal earlier in the day and have it ready to heat and eat later is a true lifesaver for maintaining sanity during busy weeks.
Imagine this: you spend a relaxed hour or so earlier in the day assembling a batch of these burritos. Once rolled, you simply wrap them individually in foil and store them in the fridge. When dinner time rolls around, instead of scrambling to cook, you just pull out the prepped burritos and pop them into a toaster oven or microwave. They heat up beautifully, tasting just as fresh and delicious as if they were made on the spot. Burritos have become my indispensable go-to, time-saving dinner on Monday nights – and honestly, that relief is priceless! This strategy not only ensures a healthy meal on the table but also frees up precious evening time for family activities or much-needed relaxation.

Customizing Your Burritos: Toppings and Variations
One of the best aspects of burritos is their incredible versatility. While the core turkey and black bean filling is undeniably delicious, the toppings are where you can truly make these burritos your own. Consider a vibrant array of fresh ingredients to add crunch, zest, and creaminess. Shredded romaine lettuce provides a crisp texture, while chopped ripe tomatoes add a burst of juicy freshness. A sprinkle of fresh cilantro elevates the flavor profile with its bright, herbaceous notes. For creaminess, a dollop of sour cream or a healthier alternative like Greek yogurt can’t be beaten. And of course, no burrito is complete without a generous spoonful of your favorite salsa – whether mild, medium, or fiery hot!
Beyond toppings, don’t hesitate to experiment with the core fillings. You could add sautéed bell peppers and onions for extra veggies and flavor, or a dash of hot sauce to the turkey mixture for an added kick. For those who enjoy a bit of heat, a few sliced jalapeños (fresh or pickled) can really brighten things up. The beauty of these homemade burritos is that they adapt to your family’s tastes, ensuring everyone gets exactly what they love.

Author: Aggie’s Kitchen
Yield: 5–6 burritos 1x
Category: Ground Turkey
Method: Stove
Cuisine: Mexican
This Turkey and Black Bean Burritos recipe was created for Bush’s Beans.
Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon oil
- 1 lb lean ground turkey
- 1 15-oz can Bush’s Cocina Latina Frijoles Negros Machacados (Black Refried Beans)
- salt and pepper to taste
- squeeze of half a lime (optional)
- 5 – 6 flour tortillas, burrito size
- 2 cups cooked rice (I used brown rice)
- 1 1/2 – 2 cups shredded Mexican blend cheese
Toppings:
- shredded lettuce
- chopped tomato
- cilantro
- sour cream or Greek yogurt
- salsa
Instructions
- In a large nonstick skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add ground turkey and cook until browned, about 5 minutes. Stir in 1 can of Bush’s Cocina Latina Black Refried Beans and continue to cook until liquid is reduced, about 3-5 minutes. Squeeze in juice from half a lime during this time (optional).
- Lay out your tortilla on a cutting board and layer rice, turkey and bean mixture and cheese. If you are not serving at this time, roll your burritos by folding over the filling, pulling filling back a bit with the tortilla, then tucking in both sides and continuing to roll. If you are serving immediately, top your filling with lettuce, tomato, salsa and sour cream if you like. (Tip: if adding extra fillings, just tuck in one side of the burrito to allow for extra room!)
