Your Next Great Read: A Curated List of Must-Read Books & My Current Literary Journeys
Welcome, fellow bookworms, to another dive into my ever-growing collection of literary adventures! There’s nothing quite like the feeling of getting lost within the pages of a compelling story, whether it’s a physical book held in your hands or an immersive audiobook playing through your headphones. Today, I’m thrilled to share an updated glimpse into my reading world, featuring recent completions and the captivating tales I’m currently exploring.
I distinctly remember setting a personal goal a few years ago on Goodreads: to read 30 books within a single year. While the specific year may change, the ambition to continuously expand my literary horizons remains. And I must say, reaching those milestones has become significantly more achievable since I embraced the world of audiobooks, particularly through Audible. The convenience is unparalleled – transforming mundane tasks like laundry, commuting, or even waiting for appointments into opportunities for intellectual escape and emotional engagement. Listening to stories unfold during a leisurely walk or a long drive has become one of my favorite ways to unwind, especially when my eyes feel strained or my mind is too weary for traditional reading. It’s truly a relaxing, almost meditative experience.
However, let’s be clear: my love for the tactile experience of a “real” book remains undimmed. There’s an undeniable charm in turning physical pages, feeling the weight of a novel in your hands, and marking your progress with a beloved bookmark. Both formats offer unique joys, and I find immense pleasure in balancing my reading across both.
So, without further ado, let’s explore what’s been captivating my imagination recently.

Books I’ve Finished Recently: My Latest Discoveries

Happiness For Beginners by Katherine Center
This novel was an absolute delight and a genuinely refreshing read that I breezed through with immense enjoyment. Katherine Center has a wonderful knack for crafting characters you instantly root for, and this story is a prime example. We follow Helen, a 32-year-old woman grappling with the aftermath of a divorce, who decides to embark on a three-week wilderness retreat in an attempt to put her life back together. What she expects is a rigorous challenge; what she finds is a journey of unexpected self-discovery and connection.
I particularly enjoyed witnessing Helen’s gradual transformation. Initially guarded and skeptical, she slowly opens herself up to developing relationships with people she might ordinarily dismiss, learning profound lessons about resilience, vulnerability, and the true meaning of happiness along the way. The wilderness setting provides a beautiful backdrop for introspection and growth, allowing Helen to shed old skins and embrace new possibilities. It’s a heartwarming and engaging contemporary fiction perfect for anyone looking for a story about second chances, finding your inner strength, and the power of human connection. It reminds us that sometimes, the biggest adventures are those we take within ourselves.

One Plus One by Jojo Moyes
Jojo Moyes has a remarkable talent for crafting poignant and memorable love stories, and One Plus One is no exception. I devoured this book quickly, drawn in by its familiar yet utterly captivating “opposites attract” romance storyline. The narrative revolves around Jess Thomas, a single mother struggling to make ends meet, and Ed Nicholls, a wealthy tech entrepreneur whose life has recently imploded. Their paths cross in the most unlikely of circumstances, leading to a road trip fraught with comedic mishaps, emotional revelations, and a slow-burn romance that feels earned and authentic.
What truly sets this book apart are its characters. Jess and Ed, along with Jess’s two children – a math whiz daughter and a dog-obsessed son – are all wonderfully likable, despite (or perhaps because of) their endearing quirks and moments of dysfunction. Moyes masterfully develops each character, allowing readers to truly connect with their hopes, fears, and vulnerabilities. The emotional depth, combined with moments of genuine humor and tension, makes for a truly compelling read. It’s a story that explores themes of family, resilience, and finding love in the most unexpected places. If you’re a fan of contemporary romance with heart, humor, and a touch of realism, this book is definitely for you.

Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng
This book, which I experienced as a powerful audiobook, left an indelible mark on me. Celeste Ng’s debut novel is nothing short of captivating, a haunting and poignant exploration of family secrets, identity, and the weight of unspoken expectations. From the very first chapter, the word “tragic” reverberated through my mind, and the story continued to tug at my heart with unwavering intensity throughout. Set in 1970s Ohio, the narrative unfolds after the mysterious death of Lydia Lee, the favorite child of a Chinese American family. Her death unravels the delicate facade of their lives, forcing her parents and siblings to confront the secrets and desires that have long simmered beneath the surface.
What I admired most about Ng’s writing is her incredible ability to develop each character with such depth and nuance. You truly feel for James, Marilyn, Nath, and Hannah, understanding their individual struggles, their desperate longing for connection, and the immense pressure placed upon them. The narrative masterfully weaves together past and present, revealing the hopes and dreams that shaped their lives and ultimately led to Lydia’s tragic fate. While this book undeniably evoked feelings of sadness and profound melancholy at times, its powerful storytelling, beautiful prose, and insightful exploration of race, gender, and family dynamics make it a highly recommended read. It’s a literary masterpiece that stays with you long after you’ve finished the final page, prompting reflection on the complexities of love, loss, and the things we leave unsaid.

Currently Reading: My Latest Adventures

The Good Girl by Mary Kubica
I’ve just embarked on The Good Girl, and already, I can tell it’s going to be one of those gripping psychological thrillers that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I’m currently listening to this one as an audiobook, and the narration is already drawing me deep into its suspenseful world. The premise is immediately captivating: Mia Dennett, the daughter of a prominent Chicago judge, goes missing after a one-night stand. While it initially appears to be a kidnapping, the truth is far more complex and twisted. The story unfolds from multiple perspectives and timelines, slowly piecing together what really happened to Mia and the secrets that her family holds.
Mary Kubica is known for her intricate plots and unexpected twists, and I’m eager to see how this story unfolds. The initial chapters have already established a palpable sense of tension and mystery, making me question every character’s motive and every unfolding event. If you enjoy thrillers that delve into the dark corners of human nature and keep you guessing until the very end, then this might be your next obsession. I’m excited (and a little nervous!) to see where Mia’s story takes me.

Left Neglected by Lisa Genova
I am already halfway through Left Neglected, and it is proving to be an incredibly compelling and insightful read that I’m having a genuinely hard time putting down. Lisa Genova, known for her powerful and meticulously researched explorations of neurological conditions, delivers another poignant narrative here. The story follows Sarah Nickerson, a career-driven mother of three whose life is irrevocably altered after a devastating car accident. The accident leaves her with a specific form of brain damage called “left neglect,” a neurological condition that literally prevents her from seeing or acknowledging anything on her left side. This isn’t just a visual impairment; it’s a cognitive blindness where her brain simply ignores half of her world.
Genova’s brilliance lies in her ability to humanize such complex medical conditions, making them accessible and deeply empathetic for the reader. As Sarah navigates her recovery, we experience firsthand the profound challenges of left neglect – from struggles with basic daily tasks to the emotional toll on her relationships and her sense of self. It’s a powerful narrative about resilience, adaptation, and rediscovering what truly matters when your entire perception of reality is altered. This author also wrote Still Alice, which remains one of my all-time favorite and most highly recommended reads, and Left Neglected is proving to be just as impactful and thought-provoking. If you appreciate fiction that combines emotional depth with scientific accuracy and offers a unique perspective on the human condition, you absolutely must add this to your reading list.
You can find Left Neglected on Amazon, available in paperback, hardback, for your Kindle, or as an audiobook on Audible.
