Life’s Grand Adventure: From a Surprise Engagement to New Horizons in Cape Town!

My life has recently taken some truly monumental and incredibly exciting turns, and I’m thrilled to update you all on these significant milestones that are shaping our future in the most incredible ways. First and foremost, you might remember me referring to him as “Boyfriend” for quite some time, but I’m absolutely delighted to announce that he has received a well-deserved upgrade…

…to Fiance! Yes, that’s right! I am officially engaged! The photos from the moment are a little blurry, but that only adds to their charm and authenticity. My now-fiancé, in his characteristic cleverness, managed to completely catch both me and our dear friends off guard. It was a perfect, spontaneous, and utterly surprising moment that I will cherish forever.

The proposal unfolded during a magical trip to Las Vegas, where we were visiting friends who had recently relocated to Nevada. Picture this: a vibrant evening, the iconic Las Vegas Strip bustling around us, and a romantic stroll from our hotel towards a much-anticipated dinner. Our path led us directly under the magnificent replica of the Eiffel Tower, an already enchanting setting. Just as we approached the restaurant, a mere twenty feet away, he brought us to a halt, positioning us right beneath the glittering structure.

My fiancé began talking about “rocks” and various other subjects that, at the time, seemed utterly irrelevant to our immediate plans. We had spent the entire day exploring a fascinating museum and had already walked a good two miles from our hotel, so hunger was definitely setting in. My mind was firmly fixed on the delicious dinner that awaited us. I distinctly remember thinking, “What on earth is he doing? Why is he talking about geological formations when we’re so close to food?” His diversion was so convincing, so perfectly unrelated to the moment, that my confusion only grew.

In my hungry and slightly exasperated state, I candidly (and perhaps a little humorously) told him that if he didn’t stop talking about obscure topics and get us to dinner, I was going to playfully punch him in the face! Oh, the irony! Little did I know, he was setting the stage for one of the most significant moments of our lives, and my hangriness was about to be completely overshadowed by pure joy.

Just a few seconds after my “threat,” he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, elegant jewelry box. The moment I saw it, everything clicked into place. The “rocks” he’d been talking about suddenly made perfect sense! A wave of realization, shock, and overwhelming emotion washed over me. I burst into tears, and the world around me transformed into a beautiful, joyful blur. All thoughts of hunger, museums, and long walks instantly vanished, replaced by an intoxicating sense of happiness and disbelief. It was truly a perfect, unscripted moment of pure love.

The immediate aftermath was equally wonderful. We were met with enthusiastic cheers from delighted bystanders who had witnessed the proposal, adding to the celebratory atmosphere. Our friends, who had been in on the secret (the sly foxes!), promptly presented us with a bottle of champagne at dinner, ensuring our celebration continued with sparkle and joy. This engagement marks the beginning of a brand new chapter, and naturally, wedding planning is now at the forefront of my thoughts. My brilliant fiancé has recently been accepted into a prestigious graduate program at the renowned University of Cape Town in vibrant South Africa! This is an incredibly significant achievement and opens up a world of possibilities for us. While it isn’t 100% final just yet – we’re still awaiting visa approvals, which, as many travelers know, can be a process – we are incredibly optimistic and are making plans to spend approximately nine months of 2014 immersing ourselves in the breathtaking beauty and rich culture of Cape Town.

I am beyond excited for this extraordinary adventure! The thought of relocating to such a magnificent and diverse country fills me with an unparalleled sense of anticipation. This isn’t a new dream for us; it’s been a long time coming. My fiancé had actually applied for a similar program before, back when he was still “Boyfriend,” but after careful consideration, we decided it wasn’t the opportune moment for us to make such a significant move at that particular time. We’ve often reflected on that decision with a touch of regret, feeling that we missed out on an incredible experience. This time around, with clarity and renewed determination, we decided to wholeheartedly take the plunge and embrace this incredible opportunity without hesitation.

Naturally, a common question arises: what will I be doing there while my fiancé is engrossed in his studies? My plan, and my fervent hope, is to dedicate the majority of my time right here, working diligently on my blog. I envision treating it with the commitment and focus of a full-time job, pouring my creative energy into developing new content, exploring various aspects of Cape Town life, and truly nurturing this platform. This will be an unparalleled chance to immerse myself in my passion, documenting our experiences, and sharing unique insights from an entirely new perspective.

Living in Cape Town presents an incredible opportunity to infuse my blog with fresh inspiration. This timing works out perfectly, as it means I’ll have a full nine months post-trip to fully devote myself to wedding planning. I can envision a beautifully organized and stress-free planning period, allowing us to create the perfect celebration to mark our union without the added pressure of juggling it with an international move. It’s truly the best of both worlds: an incredible adventure followed by the joy of planning our dream wedding.
